I’m often stopped in my tracks thinking about everything that had to happen — generations of it — just for me to be here, breathing, with my wits somehow still about me. There’s always a story behind the curtain of life; we just tend to focus on the stage. And life wants to live. Gardening taught me that. Even in less-than-ideal conditions, even against real unpredictability, life finds its way. We can’t always overcome what’s in front of us — but when you think about everything that could go wrong moment to moment, it’s a small miracle to take breath after breath.
I think, too, about the people from past eras — what it must have been like to live without everything we’ve come to take for granted. I’ve never wanted to trade places with them. But I’ve come to believe our generation carries something unprecedented: we’re the bridge. Between what didn’t work for the generations before us, and whatever we’re brave enough to build differently for the ones after.
That’s a lot to carry. So how do we stay steady while carrying it?
For me, the answer has never been a five-step morning routine or a productivity hack. It’s something simpler and slower: rituals.
What Is a Ritual?
Ritual = routine + intention, repeated.
That’s it. Not a rigid checklist, not something you either do perfectly or fail at. A ritual is anything ordinary that you do on purpose, again and again, until it becomes a place you can return to — no matter what season of life you’re in.
Rituals live in three windows of your day, and each one does something different for you.
Morning Rituals — Setting the Course
Mornings are potent. What you do in the first stretch of your day shapes whether you move through it responding with intention, or reacting to whatever hits you first. You don’t need an hour. Even five grounded minutes before the day takes hold can change its shape.
Try one this week:
- Before checking your phone, name one word for how you want to feel today
- Drink a full glass of water before anything else
- Step outside for two minutes of natural light
Mid-Day Rituals — The Reset
Life rarely goes to plan. When you feel yourself getting dysregulated, discouraged, or pulled off-center, a mid-day ritual is your way back — not to “fix” the day, but to meet yourself in it.
Try one this week:
- Step away from your screen for five minutes, no scrolling, just sitting
- Put a hand on your chest and take five slow breaths
- Say one sentence out loud to yourself that’s true and kind
Evening Rituals — The Release
Evening is for reflection — not to grade yourself on the day, but to notice what went well, gently reframe what didn’t, and release what’s finished so you can meet tomorrow clean. This is where peace actually lives: not in a perfect day, but in a completed one.
Try one this week:
- Write down one thing that went right today, however small
- Say (out loud or in your journal): “this is done, I release it”
- Set tomorrow’s first small task before bed, so your mind can rest
Building Your Own Ritual Formula
There’s no single right combination — and it’s allowed to change with your season. Some weeks call for less. Some rituals you’ll rotate in and out. Trust what you’re drawn to, and trust yourself enough to pivot the moment something stops pouring back into you. Below are categories to pull from — mix, match, and make it yours.
- Being Present — Eliminate distractions and sit with your own thoughts: a screen-free block, journaling, meditating, or any activity that makes you lose track of time.
- Movement — Stretching, yoga, myofascial release, the gym, dancing, or whatever physical activity actually feels good in your body.
- Learning — A library visit, a class on something you’re curious about, an audiobook, a podcast episode.
- Fueling — Cooking a balanced meal, trying a new ingredient, taking your supplements, or simply setting an intention over your food while you prepare it.
- Preparing — A prioritized to-do list with room for flexibility, a reminder set so your mind doesn’t have to hold it, asking for help instead of carrying it all yourself.
- Nourishing — Drinking water, and words of affirmation: I am alive. I am safe. I am coherent. All is in right order. I am in rhythm with perfect timing.
Start Small
You don’t need all three windows working perfectly, and you definitely don’t need to overhaul your life this week. Pick one ritual — just one — from whichever window feels most needed right now, and try it for the next three days. Notice how it feels. Adjust. That’s the whole practice.
This is what it means to stay rooted while you’re rising through change: not stillness, not certainty, just a return — to yourself, again and again.
Rooted. Rising. Return.
What ritual are you starting with this week? I’d love to hear — reply and tell me.
With love and grace, — MaMa LaLa
